Obituary of Michael Beckermann

Beckermann, Michael Peacefully on Friday, August 18, 2017 in his 81st year. Beloved husband of Claire and loving father of Gabrielle, Karen and Christine (Michelle). Also survived by brothers Thomas (Christine), Ansgar (Hildegarde) and sister Margareth Schutte (Gerhard); predeceased by his brother Johannes (Uta). Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews. Born in Hamburg, Germany, Michael came to Canada for the summer in 1957. He never did return to live in Germany. After completing a degree in Engineering at McGill University, he moved to the Niagara Region and worked for many years at Atlas Steels. In retirement, Michael continued his strong commitment to social justice through his work with Development & Peace, CRA Community Tax Clinics, Kairos, Sisters of Loretto, and many volunteer activities. Michael enjoyed live theatre, visiting galleries, exploring new places and returning to Germany to visit family. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband and father, understanding, encouraging and there in moments of need. His family will remember him for his sense of humour, his willingness to help anyone, his Christmas martinis and the many sacrifices he quietly made for us. A special thanks to the staff of the Woolcott Wing at the Welland General Hospital who cared for him for many months with such gentleness, respect and honesty. NP Cami, the nurses, PSWs and all the others got to know Michael and his family, and made his interests and what was important to him, the centre of his care. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Peace (6988 Stanley Ave, Niagara Falls) on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to Patrick J.
