Myrna Nichol

Obituary of Myrna Ann Nichol

It is with immense sadness, but grateful hearts, that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother (aka Femmie) and grandmother, Myrna Ann Nichol (nee MacDonald), on December 3, 2023, in her 84th year with her family by her side.

Loving wife of Laurie Nichol, devoted mother of Keith Nichol, Nancy (Drew) Bielawski and Susan Nichol (Peter Scott). Proud and awesome “Grandma Myrn” of Hayden, Keegan (Isanna Biglands), and Liam (Julie Chou) Bielawski. Survived by her brother Doern MacDonald (Elizabeth), her sisters-in-law Doreen Goring and Bea Mackay, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by her parents, Leslie and Florence MacDonald, her brother Brenton MacDonald (the late Claire), sister-in-law Marion MacDonald, grandsons Isaac and Kyle Bielawski, and brother-in-law Macklem Nichol (the late Arlene).

Myrna was born on December 30, 1939, at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, and was raised in nearby Coalburn. She attended East Pictou Rural High School, excelled academically and graduated at age 16, whereafter she headed west and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There she started her banking career, and also met the love of her life, Laurie. They wed on February 22, 1960, and enjoyed over 63 years of marriage. They started their family in Winnipeg, moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, followed by Toronto, Ontario, and retired in St. Catharines, Ontario.

She was a kind and loving mother who always put family first, and passed on to her kids her strong values and respect for others. She treasured spending time with her grandchildren, of whom she was incredibly proud, and who brought her so much joy.

She always had Nova Scotia in her heart, and had a true Maritimer’s sense of humour. She was full of Maritime hospitality – the door was always open and everyone was welcome. She loved reading and crossword puzzles, and was incredibly talented at all types of needlework (athletics, not so much!). She valued her many bank colleagues and her bridge girls, and especially loved her life-long friendships with her cousins Donna Johnstone and Norma Morris.

The family extends its sincerest thanks to the compassionate staff at Tabor Manor, who took such good care of Myrna in her last few years.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 10, 2023, from 1:00PM to 2:30PM, followed by a celebration of her life at 2:30PM, at Garden City Funerals & Cremation (formerly Patrick J. Darte Funeral Chapel), 39 Court Street, St. Catharines. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Alzheimer’s Society, Salvation Army or Tabor Manor would be appreciated. Online condolences may be shared at www.gardencityfunerals.ca
