Obituary of Barbara Burton

Burton, Barbara (nee Tolmonan) Aug 26, 1931 - July 5, 2009. Mom was born in Toronto to Vieno Tolmonan, but was raised by Emil and Ida Stickman in Cochrane Ontario. Mom came with some friends, for a two week vacation to St. Catharines and liked it so much here, that she returned a month later to stay for good. She made many trips back to Cochrane over the years to visit family and friends. While working at the Grange restaurant she met her future husband. Mom was predeceased by her husband Percy (Apr 30, 1996) after 48 years of marriage. Loving mother of Mal (Nancy) of Hamilton, Heather Purnell (David) of N-O-T-L, Wendy Wheaton (Edward) and Mark (Becky) of St. Catharines. Mom will always be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Jeromy, Lisa , Jennifer, Ryan, Brittany, Caitlyn, Donovan, Stephanie, Gregory, Meaghan, Noah and great grandchildren Sarah, Hailey and Jesse. Mom was a long time member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church CWL, The Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 138 & 17 for 6 years and the RCL Ladies Auxiliary for 43 years, TOPS ON#31 for 40 years, Driver/delivery for Meals on Wheels for 36 years, past member of Thorold Senior Assoc and CAW Retirees. Mom loved bingo, bowling and darts, not to mention playing the odd one arm bandit. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Patrick J Darte Funeral Chapel, 39 Court St Catharines Ontario (905-685-6584). The Legion will be having a service at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Vigil Prayers will be held at 7pm Wednesday. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. Rite of Committal at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Meals on Wheels St. Catharines-Thorold, Canadian Diabetes Association or The Royal Canadian Legion Br 138 Building Fund.
