Obituary of Fred Wong
It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Fred Wong at the age of 63 on September 3, 2024.
Fred was born into a big, close-knit family who loved him deeply: son of Danny and Bessy Wong, brother to Ken On (May), Marlene (Michael Chuyow), Bob (Glenda), and Annie (Bill Quan). Growing up, “Foo” always had a grin on his face and a joke up his sleeve. The subject of many family legends, he had a penchant for playing pranks and getting into shenanigans, especially with his brother Bob – together, they were “Search & Destroy.” Later on, he relished the role of “fun uncle/great-uncle,” trickster, and teacher to Lisa (Matt), David, Kevin, Ashley, Marissa, Ryan, Sarah, Danielle, Jason, and Alex. He married Grace (née Jakobs), and they were blessed with a son, Ethan, whom they adored. Fred shared his passion for the outdoors, dogs, and mechanics with Ethan, and they spent many happy mornings fishing on the Niagara River. An industrial millwright at Dofasco for 42 years, Fred was a born tinkerer. Happy to help whenever something needed fixing, he especially relished any excuse to use his blowtorch or chainsaw. In his retirement, he loved to be out on his boat with friends and family, waiting to hear the magic words “Fish on!”.
He is greatly missed by all who knew him. Fred joins his son, wife, brother Ken, and father in heaven. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 12 from 6 to 9 PM at Garden City Funerals & Cremations, 39 Court St, with a private funeral service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Heart and Stroke or Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
